Kerry Washington chats to Essence about the impact of playing Olivia Pope on network TV:
However successful she may be, Washington is acutely aware that her success isn’t always shared with her peers. She’s one of few leading actresses starring in her own TV drama, and says she has been sincerely supported by other women of color.
“I was floored by the outpouring of love from people who were excited that the show would even exist,” she said, overwhelmed with emotion. “…And that we as a community would get to see ourselves in every home in America as accomplished, smart, empowered, sophisticated, vulnerable women.”

“I recently spoke at a university where a student told me it was such a shame that Nigerian men were physical abusers like the father character in my novel. I told him that I had recently read a novel called American Psycho, and that it was a shame that young Americans were serial murderers.”
